Why a standard notation?

A free-form flowchart reads intuitively, but everyone interprets it in their own way. BPMN 2.0 (Business Process Model and Notation) defines a precise graphical vocabulary: a start event is not a task, an exclusive gateway is not a parallel gateway, a lane designates a responsible party. The result: a process modelled in BPMN is understood unambiguously by anyone who knows the standard — and it is required in more and more tender documents, quality management initiatives and IT projects.
